Author: Christoph Ehlers · Published: January 11, 2023 · Updated: July 21, 2026
You are planning a web design project but aren’t sure how best to explain your needs to us? Use our briefing guide: Seven short questions about your goals, content, and budget will help us understand your project right from the start.
No problem – use our briefing guide!
We’ve compiled the key questions that a website project should address: Who, What, Why, How, Where, When, and How Much. You don’t have to have an answer to everything right away.
Just a few key details can provide a good basis for discussion and save both you and us time and money as we move forward.
Based on this, we will then work with you to develop your website concept and design.

1. Who?
Please introduce yourself briefly.
- How large is your company, and what industry is it in?
- Are there any marketing initiatives to consider, both in general and in the area of online marketing?
- What sets your company apart (USP)?
2. What?
What exactly is this about?
- Do you want to showcase your business online—in other words, create a corporate website?
- Would you like to present or sell a product or service online (online store/e-commerce website)?
- Or are you looking to attract new employees and showcase your employer brand (career website)?
- Or perhaps you’d like to create a microsite where you can promote new products, services, or other news on a smaller scale?
- Or do you need a landing page on a specific topic that’s optimized for search engines and focuses specifically on a call-to-action for lead generation?
- We could also create a blog or a web app for you.
3. Why?
What is the objective of the project?
The goal essentially determines the nature and scope of the design and implementation.
- Explain an existing product, service, or concept?
- Introduce and promote a new product or service?
- Increase your company’s overall brand awareness?
- Attract new employees?
- Engage, entertain, and build loyalty among your target audience?
4. How?
Do you already have any ideas about the type of web design project you’d like?
- Do you already have a website, or are you starting from scratch?
- Should the navigation concept, content, and structure be retained or redesigned, as appropriate?
- How well do you know the target audience for your website? Are there detailed descriptions or user scenarios available?
- Does your company have corporate design guidelines to follow and/or a marketing department?
- A website is not a one-time project. It continues to grow and must be maintained. How should this maintenance be handled? With a CMS, or will the IT department or an external service provider handle it?
5. Where?
Where is your website used?
- What is the intended reach of the web project?
- Are you targeting a regional audience, or is your offering aimed at an international audience?
- Which language versions and country-specific pages are needed?
6. When?
Timeline and Deadline
Realistic planning gives both you and us the necessary certainty for our collaboration.
- Over what time frame should the project be implemented (using internal/external resources)?
- Do you already have a set date in mind for when the website project should go live?
7. How much?
And last but not least, let’s talk about money.
- To help us understand your vision for the project, it would, of course, be helpful to know your budget in advance.
- This will give us a solid foundation for our discussions right from the start and allow us to work together to find the right solution for you. – And we’re sure to find a solution.
